Whatever we give our attention to is what grows.

Today's Scripture: Mark 4:1-9

Daily Scripture Readings & Reflections

  1. Sunday: Mark 4:1 (CEB) Jesus began to teach beside the lake again. Such a large crowd gathered that he climbed into a boat there on the lake. He sat in the boat while the whole crowd was nearby on the shore.

Reflection: Close your eyes and imagine that you are one of the people in the crowd beside the lake shore that day. Can you hear the crashing of the waves on the shore? Can you see Jesus through the crowd climbing into a boat? What else do you hear and see? What does it feel like being in Jesus' presence, listening to his stories, his words of wisdom? Sit quietly for a few moments and soak it all in. Pause for two minutes naming the things for which you are grateful and take a moment to give thanks to God for God's provision for you.

Breath Prayer: Inhale: There is... Exhale: enough
  2. Monday: Mark 4:2-3a (CEB) He said many things to them in parables. While teaching them, he said, "Listen to this!"

Reflection: Why do you think Jesus told so many stories? Think about how many stories you tell or hear in a day? What does this say about the importance of our stories? Pause for two minutes naming the things for which you are grateful and take a moment to give thanks to God for God's provision for you.

Breath Prayer: Inhale: There is... Exhale: enough
  3. Tuesday: Mark 4:3b-5 (CEB) A farmer went out to scatter seed. As he was scattering seed, some fell on the path; and the birds came and ate it. Other seed fell on rocky ground where the soil was shallow. They sprouted immediately because the soil wasn't deep.

Reflection: As you rise to meet each day, what is it that you most want to scatter, like seeds, in the world? On what kind of ground do you find yourself scattering your most precious and valuable gifts? Pause for two minutes naming the things for which you are grateful and take a moment to give thanks to God for God's provision for you.

Breath Prayer: Inhale: There is... Exhale: enough
  4. Wednesday:  Mark 4:6 (CEB) When the sun came up, it scorched the plants; and they dried up because they had no roots.

Reflection: Can you think of a time in your own life when you have felt scorched and dried up? If so, how did it leave you feeling? Ponder for a few minutes what it means to have "no roots?" Why are roots important? What are the roots that keep your life grounded? Pause for two minutes naming the things for which you are grateful and take a moment to give thanks to God for God's provision for you.

Breath Prayer: Inhale: Inhale: There is... Exhale: enough
  5. Thursday: Mark 4:7 (CEB) Other seed fell among thorny plants. The thorny plants grew and choked the seeds, and they produced nothing.

Reflection: Think of a time when your best efforts produced nothing. In retrospect, what might you have done differently? Was their an unexpected gift, some new insight you received in the midst of your struggle? Pause for two minutes naming the things for which you are grateful and take a moment to give thanks to God for God's provision for you.

Breath Prayer: Inhale: There is...Exhale: enough
  6. Friday: Mark 4:8 (CEB) Other seed fell into good soil and bore fruit. Upon growing and increasing, the seed produced in one case a yield of thirty to one, in another case a yield of sixty to one, and in another case a yield of one hundred to one.

Reflection: Where is your life bearing fruit? What fruit are you still longing to produce? Spend some time in quiet today pondering the path to bearing this fruit.Pause for two minutes naming the things for which you are grateful and take a moment to give thanks to God for God's provision for you.

Breath Prayer: Inhale: There is...Exhale: enough
  7. Saturday: Mark 4:9 (CEB) He said,"Whoever has ears to listen should pay attention!"

Reflection:What does it mean to listen? Really listen? How well do you pay attention to what your ears hear or your eyes see? Spend today using all of your senses to really listen to the world around you and within you. Pause for two minutes naming the things for which you are grateful and take a moment to give thanks to God for God's provision for you.

Breath Prayer: Inhale: There is... Exhale: enough
