October 5, 2014

Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." ~ Matthew 19:14

Today's Scripture: Luke 2:41-43

Daily Scripture Readings & Reflections

  1. Sunday: Luke 2:41-43; Common English Bible (CEB) Each year his parents went to Jerusalem for the Passover Festival. When he was 12 years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to their custom. After the festival was over, they were returning home, but the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents didn't know it.

Reflection: Jesus was a typical 12 year-old. He was into his own world and not even thinking about Mom or Dad. What were you like at 12 years of age?

Breath Prayer: Inhale: Forever I am... Exhale: loved by God
  2. Monday: Luke 2:44-45; Common English Bible (CEB) Supposing that he was among their band of travelers, they journeyed on for a full day while looking for him among their family and friends. When they didn't find Jesus, they returned to Jerusalem to look for him.

Reflection: Notice what Jesus' parents did when they realized Jesus wasn't with them. What would your parents have done if you did something similar to what Jesus did?

Breath Prayer: Inhale: Wherever I Am... Exhale: there is God
  3. Tuesday: Luke 2:46-47;  Common English Bible (CEB) After three days they found him in the temple. He was sitting among the teachers, listening to them and putting questions to them. Everyone who heard him was amazed by his understanding and his answers.

Reflection: Here we see Jesus in a dialogue with sages in his life. The conversation seems to be going both ways, with each learning from the other. This is what adolescents are saying they long for. They want sages but not adults who just tell them what to do. How did you feel when adults just tried to instruct you but weren't so willing to listen?

Breath Prayer: Inhale: Whomever I am with...Exhale: I am their neighbor
  4. Wednesday: Luke 2:48; Common English Bible (CEB) When his parents saw him, they were shocked. His mother said, "Child, why have you treated us like this? Listen! Your father and I have been worried. We've been looking for you!"

Reflection:What would your parents have said to you after being missing for three full days? Can you think of a similar story about yourself?

Breath Prayer: Inhale: Inhale: Forever I am... Exhale: loved by God
  5. Thursday: Luke 2:49-50; Common English Bible (CEB) Jesus replied, "Why were you looking for me? Didn't you know that it was necessary for me to be in my Father's house?" But they didn't understand what he said to them.

Reflection: How would you have responded to your parents being upset with you? Did you ever feel like your parents didn't understand you? What did that feel like?

Breath Prayer: Inhale: Wherever I am...Exhale: there is God
  6. Friday: Luke 2:51 Common English Bible (CEB) Jesus went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. His mother cherished every word in her heart.

Reflection: How did your parents affirm you in your adolescent years? How did they discourage you in those same years?

Breath Prayer: Inhale: Whomever I am with...Exhale: I am their neighbor
  7. Saturday: Luke 2:52 Common English Bible (CEB) Jesus matured in wisdom and years, and in favor with God and with people.

Reflection: How have your adolescent experiences helped you to mature into who you are today? Do you believe that God finds favor with your life? Why or why not?

Breath Prayer: Inhale: Forever I am... Exhale: loved by God
